Introduction

Directory privacy protection is a useful security feature for restricting access to sensitive content, but there are times when this protection needs to be removed. Whether due to content restructuring, public accessibility requirements, or project completion, removing password protection allows unrestricted access to previously secured directories. cPanel’s Directory Privacy interface provides a simple method for disabling password protection while preserving user account configurations for future use. This guide explains how to remove directory privacy using the Files > Directory Privacy section in cPanel.

Prerequisites

  • Access to cPanel with the necessary permissions.
  • Existing password protected directory.

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Log in to cPanel

Access and log in to your cPanel account using your username and password.

Step 2: Access Directory Privacy

Under the Files section, click Directory Privacy. You will see a list of folders with their Privacy Status.

Step 3: Disable Privacy

Navigate to the protected folder and click Edit. Then, deselect the Password protect this directory checkbox and click Save.

Note: The user accounts you created for that directory will simply become inactive. If you decide to re-enable Directory Privacy for the same folder in the future, you can reuse the same usernames and passwords.

Step 4: Verify the changes

You can verify the changes by checking the Privacy Status of the folder.

Conclusion

Removing directory privacy through cPanel’s Directory Privacy interface is a straightforward process that restores public access to previously protected folders. The system preserves existing user accounts, allowing for easy reactivation of protection if needed in the future, providing flexibility in managing directory access controls.
